100 Heart Surgeries and Growing

100 Hearts

Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center (LHAAMC) has celebrated the completion of its 100th heart surgery procedure. The milestone occurred in October 2021, just 10 months after expanding its heart program in December 2020.

The journey began in 2015 when LHAAMC applied for a certificate of need (CON), with the goal to keep hundreds of patients in their community and avoid the stress of traveling to other hospitals for heart surgery and follow-up care.

Letters of support poured in from the community. “The hospital has been a destination for heart care for years, and adding cardiac surgery helps us better serve the thousands of heart patients who come to LHAAMC every year,” said Adrian Park, MD, chair of surgery.

In the summer of 2019, a national search kicked off for the chief of cardiac surgery. In addition, two dedicated cardiac surgery rooms were built.

In July 2020, Daniel C. Lee, MD, started as chief of cardiac surgery. Prior to joining LHAAMC, Dr. Lee served as faculty cardiothoracic surgeon and co-director of the Center for Aortic Disease at Baylor Scott & White (BSW)-Texas A&M Health Science Center in Central Texas. He achieved the distinction of being the most productive cardiothoracic surgeon at BSW from 2018 to 2020.

In December 2020, just two days before Christmas, Dr. Lee performed his first surgery at LHAAMC.

“Starting our heart surgery program and serving our community here in Annapolis has been an honor and privilege. The successful milestone of 100 cases is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our amazing team of professionals,” Dr. Lee says. “Together, we look forward to growing a thriving, world-class cardiac surgery program.”

Less than a year later, the program has performed more than 100 surgeries. And the heart program will also welcome a second surgeon, Murtaza Y. Dawood, MD, in winter 2021.
